A mokko-shaped iron tsuba partially sukashi in style, with a gilt nunome edge. The popular theme of the “Chinese sages in the bamboo grove” is deeply carved here with gilt nunome zogan and silver and copper inlays. Sages traditionally garbed in Chinese robes with elaborate fans are engaged in leisurely pursuits - reading scrolls and conversing and under a waterfall. The sukashi design on the reverse reveals tall, leafy bamboo, their stalks detailed in gilt. This finely-wrought tsuba is in good condition and includes its own silk-padded storage box. Length: 3”, width: 2.75” 19th Century, Edo Period, Japan
