A set of fuchi-kashira executed in bronze and overlaid with gold, silver, shakudo and copper. Portrayed here are two legendary figures in Japanese folklore as they clash in the epic story of Benkei and Ushiwaka (young Yoshitsune), the figures sculpted in high relief on the top and sides of the fuchi-kashira. On the kashira, Benkei, the strongman of Japan, waits on a bridge for his worthy rival, Ushiwaka, who, by the light of the moon, leaps in-mid-air, sword drawn. The tension between the two rivals is enhanced by the sparse background and frozen motion of the characters. Fuchi kashira is in very good condition. Length: 1.5” 19th Century, Japan
