A Shibayama and gold-lacquered inro comprised of four cases strung together by a gold-silk cord and small carnelian ojime. Two exquisite panels on kinji grounds display intricate encrusted images of gnarled plum blossom trees and rocks. Playful sparrows cavort around the panels and trees. On one side, an elegant karamono-style basket on a table sports an elaborate peony arrangement with a lone butterfly fluttering above. On the reverse, an aogai incense burner of ancient tripodic form with shishi finial is festooned with a wisteria branch and single butterfly. Unsigned. This inro is in very good condition with no problems. Length: 3” Meiji Period, Japan
