A most unusual iron tsuba in rounded- square form with textured surface, its edge wrapped in gold-lacquered leather (nerikawa). This early technique, difficult to execute, consists of applying hardened leather with an intricate lacquer design (sprinkled gold) to the edge. In this case, the carved karakusa design is inlaid with gilt above and below the hitsu. The reverse, a mirror-image. This one-of-a-kind tsuba is in very good condition with only minor rubbing to the gilt along the edge due to age and use. Width: 3.25”, length: 3.5” Late Edo Period, Japan
