A vibrant bronze and multi-metal figure of Daruma with gold detailing. The founder of Zen Buddhism, fully awake after his long meditation, stands erect upon a rocky plinth, his robes swirling around him. His wide-open gilt and shakudo eyes, realistically sculpt body and facial features work well with the stylized movements of his garments, lending an air of mystery to this imposing figure. Daruma is a special deity in Japan. From Buddhist temple bronze sculptures to whimsical toys—Daruma is everywhere in Japan. Artists working in various media rendered Daruma with great respect and others in comical forms. This Daruma is special for its ultra-realism and expressive gilt eyes. Takamura Koun (1852-1934) of Tokyo worked under the Buddhist sculptor Takamura Toun and was later adopted by Toun’s older sister in 1863. He exhibited in various domestic and international expositions and was an instructor at the Tokyo Art School from 1890-1926. Includes its own tomobako. Takamura Koun signature plaque seen on reverse side. Height: 11.2” Taisho Period, Japan
