A boxwood netsuke carved in the round as a mythological shishi hatching from an egg, its surface cracked for added effect. Comically, the shishi pokes its head and fronts paws from one end and hind legs and bushy tail from the other. Its alert inlaid eyes reflect the newborn’s curiosity. This lovely netsuke is in excellent condition. Carved signature, Arikawa or Arikado on base. 19th Century, Japan
