An impressive bronze covered jar of drum-like form, its focus a flock of glistening chidori in-flight over tumultuous waves, gilt highlights overall. The subject of this marvelous piece, of chidori crossing the ocean, a theme so prevalent in Japanese folklore, symbolizes perseverance, an attribute much beloved by humankind worldwide. (Symbolically, these small migratory birds often are associated with the warrior class, their image displayed on armor, sword fittings and on the saya, as the crest of a noted family.) This finely made bronze covered jar is in excellent condition, its minor surface wear expected and commensurate with age and use. Height: 14.5”, width: 10” Meiji Period, Japan
