A white Hirado porcelain mizusashi for the tea ceremony, its porcelain cover surmounted by a finial shaped as a minogame. The body, rendered with cobalt tortoises scrambling across its surface, serves as a ground for the exquisite, lifelike creatures. (In Japanese folklore, the tortoise symbolizes longevity; the bushy-tailed minogame descends from dragons and serves as the messenger for the queen of the underwater world.) This rare and charming Hirado fresh water jar is in excellent condition and belongs in a collection whose owners appreciate the time-honored tradition great Hirado wares hold universally. Height: 9”, width: 7.5” 19th Century, Japan
