A unique and finely woven bamboo basket with thin strands of bamboo fanning out in various directions. This voluminous mountainous structure, formed by interspersed strands of leached bamboo and stained ribbon-like bands, evokes the form of a samurai helmet. The artist appropriately named this piece “kabutoyama” or “helmet mountain”. An artwork in its genre, this rare basket includes a tomobako inscribed “Ryusen Hanakago” and signed Juran. (The artist, Shiotsuki Juran, was born in 1948 Beppu, Japan, third generation of basket weavers in his family. He exhibited in numerous Japanese Traditional Art Crafts exhibitions and in the 1989 Dento Kogeiten, won the Chairman’s Prize. Four of his works reside at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, CA.) Height: 14”, length: 20”, width: 14” 20th Century, Showa Period, Japan
