A deep Imari porcelain punch bowl bordered by a gilt, foliate rim, its central visual cannons blasting from the sides of a Black Ship. This historical Namban-theme features rondels of two Dutchmen in 18th century garb set against iron red grounds connected by scrollwork of peonies and leafy vines in cobalt, iron red and gilt. The theme continues on the bowl’s interior with additional pairs of Dutchmen, Black ships and floral arrangements on a gilt and green-enameled latticed ground. In excellent condition with no problems and no repairs, only minor rubbing to the gilt due to age and use. Diameter: 14.25”, height: 6.25” Taisho Period, Japan
