A round iron yamagase (unrefined copper) tsuba of sukashi style finely sculpted with a figural image of an inebriated Shojo with joyful expression displaying a sake bowl and ladle over a cresting wave. (This beloved mythical creature is always depicted in Japanese art inebriated from his favorite drink (sake) and garbed in traditional billowy robes with characteristic shaggy red hair.) This amusing tsuba, inscribed “Yamashiro Ju Masanobu” on reverse side, is in excellent condition with minor signs of age. Edo Period, Japan
