A naturalistically sculpted bronze okimono of a macaque mid-stride, a persimmon branch with its fruit still attached, in the macaque’s paw. The creature’s vitality is enhanced by high relief carving, different toned patina on the face and paws and firm positioning of the limbs. With brilliant precision and keen observation, the artist delivers the macaque's realistic demeanor. (The macaque often is portrayed in Japanese art holding a persimmon in reference to the beloved legend of the “Battle of the Monkey and the Crab”.) This fantastic bronze sculpture is in excellent condition with the noted animal sculptor’s Seiya signature plaque on nether side. This grand okimono is in excellent condition. Height: 11”, length: 23.5” Meiji Period, Japan
