A carved boxwood okimono realistically sculpted as a mouse with offspring nibbling upon an eggplant, eyes inlaid with jet. Finely incised fur, sporadic wormholes and dimensional modeling of the bodies add to the quality and naturalism of this charming piece. Rectangular signature plaque on reverse side. (Rats are not only the first sign of the Chinese zodiac, but also symbols of fertility and wealth in East Asia. In Japan, the rat /mouse is an emblem of good luck and companion of the beloved god of wealth, Daikoku.) This whimsical carving is in excellent condition. Height: 1.75”, Length: 4” Meiji Period, Japan
