A stained bamboo ikebana flower basket sculpted in double-gourd form. Executed in a tightly-woven mat plaiting, this hanging basket with flared lip and looped reed handle features delicate shrimp-stitch work and wrapping. It is the work of Osaka-born master Suemura Shobun (1917-2000), his incised signature on base. (Apprenticed with Chikuryusai I, Shobun first exhibited at the Nitten Exhibition in 1951 and 26 times after. His works were represented in the first Japan New Crafts Exhibition in 1979 and again in 1981 and in 1973, the City of Osaka gave the master an award of appreciation for reviving interest in bamboo arts.) This important Suemura Shobun ikebana basket is in excellent condition and includes tomobako. Height: 16.25” Showa Period, Japan
