An oblong ikebana basket with wide bamboo strips woven in an open-hexagonal pattern, its handle formed of twisted rattan. This purse-shaped ikebana basket has the appearance of leather, its fine bamboo slats dyed a rich, plum color in keeping with the style of bamboo master Waichisai. The celebrated Waichisai family was greatly known for particular treatments to the bamboo in their finished works, such as the richness of the color dyes and leather-like aspect to the bamboo. The basket is a wonderful example of its type, and is in very good condition with only minor wear to the bamboo commensurate with age and use, includes tomobako. Waichisai gold signature on base. Height: 21.5" Taisho Period, Japan
