A small and charming foliate-formed Satsuma bowl, its exterior a profusion of cascading wisteria and rising iris. Inside, bijin, attendants and children enjoy an outing under an umbrella of sakura branches. This exquisitely painted bowl with jewel-toned enamels and unique form is the work of renowned Satsuma artist, Seikozan. According to Louis Lawrence in his book entitled “ Satsuma” (pg.102), “The Seikozan studio painted some of the very best Satsuma pieces […] very few that are not of the highest standard [.]” Seikozan signature cartouche located on the base. This Satsuma bowl is in excellent condition with neither damage nor restoration. Diameter: 3” Meiji Period, Japan
