An imposing, full-bodied sculptural vase with delicately-turned lip. Carved in high relief with phoenix and chidori among pine, sakura and bamboo, the creamy soft yellow glaze heightens the imagery and intensifies the form. Renowned potter, Nakamura Toko IV signature on the base. Includes rosewood stand and double tomobako inscribed: “given as a gift from the Imperial Couple, Showa (Era) Second Year (1927) March 4th.” (Born from an Ishikawa family of potters, Nakamura Toko moved to Kyoto where he learned the style of his adopted father Nakamura Toko III. Toko IV’s work was purchased by the Imperial Household, which commissioned various works by the artist.) This rare and stunning porcelain vase is in excellent condition. Height: 17.5” Taisho/Showa Period, Japan
