An unusual pottery vase, tall and elegant in form, by the renowned artist Inoue Ryosai, known for his Sumida gawa pottery pieces as well as for his remarkable studio porcelains. In his Sumida works, Ryosai experimented with contrasts in materials, texture and relief , using both porcelain and pottery as his media. In this lovely studio vase, the green crackled glaze on the neck and lower portion of the vase contrasts with the white, moriage band of iris rising from the foot. The juxtaposition of the white glazed iris, done in a delicate stylized manner, against its brown textured background, displays Ryosai's masterful control of the medium and accentuates the brilliance of the glaze. Inoue Ryosai's four character signature mark in underglaze blue found on the base. This vase is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restoration. Height: 12" ca 1900 Japan
