Stained boxwood netsuke of an amorous kappa (water sprite) atop of a semi-open abalone shell. The mythical creature’s skin provides a wonderful textural contrast to the shell’s smooth surface. This study, erotic in tone, alludes in a subtle way to the clam’s reference in Japanese art to the female’s private anatomy. Its jet-inlaid eyes denote the kappa’s passionate nature. Incised signature of Taro can be found on base. This netsuke is in excellent condition. Length: 2” 19th Century, Japan
