A studio porcelain vase of globular form rendered in under-the-glaze blue enamel on a white ground with over-the-glaze details in soft enamel colors. The vase’s subject, fishermen alongside the banks of a river, gathered together under a canopy of trees, delight in moments of rest after a long day’s work. Wearing traditional fisherman’s garb, they converse and trade their “catch-of-the-day”, some still in the woven creels. This masterfully rendered depiction of comradery is the work of Imperial Court Artist Makuzu Kozan, his signature on the base. The vase is in excellent condition. Height: 8.75”; diameter: 9.25” Meiji Period, Japan
