This is a rare and important pottery kogo (box) modeled in the form of the chidori (sparrow), so beloved to the Japanese. This piece is attributed to Nonomura Ninsei, the greatly influential pottery master, renowned for the beauty of his tea ceremony implements. Characteristic of Ninsei's style, this lovely piece is executed in a robust tenmoko brown glaze, accentuating its form. The kogo is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restoration. Height: 2", length and width: 2.5" Edo Period, Japan.
