| This is a sentoku tsuba (sword guard), Nara-styled, of rounded-square form (nade kaku). On the smooth surface, two horses in gilt wire, shakudo and copper inlays rest near a stream and pine. The sinuous stream and gnarled pine tree are executed in shishiaibori, or low relief carving, level with the surface. A piece similar to this one can be found in "Collection of Japanese Sword Guards at The Peabody Museum ", Salem. (See "Japanese Swords Guards"-Peabody, p.XXXVIII, 1975.) The tsuba is in excellent condition with no dents, losses or restoration. Circa 1780, Nara, Japan | |||||||
