An important studio pottery incense burner formed as a boat with thatched roof, the finial shaped as two nestling doves. In the style of the Kyoto-based pottery master, Nonomura Ninsei, this piece combines his somewhat rustic treatment of the medium with those of the master, Makuzu Kozan. Kozan's work, evident here in the refinement of technique and enameling used to define the gilt-detailed grasses alongside the boat.and refined detailing. This incense burner is in excellent condition. Makuzu Kozan carved signature on the base. (A similar piece was published in the catalog for the “Miyagawa Kozan and the World of Makuzu Ware,” October 28-December 24, 2001 exhibition at the Yokohama Museum of Art, Japan, page 127, No.144. Another similar piece formerly part of a very important 1905 private collection in Japan.) Length: 6 1/8” 19th Century, Japan
