Here is a marvelous Satsuma gosu- blue censer of cylindrical form and reticulated silver cover on four bracketed feet. Demon handles eerily carved with open mouths, pointy ears and piercing gaze embrace each side. Large, free-form cartouches on front and back depict a fierce three-toed dragon and prancing kirin, both surrounded by flames and clouds. The mythological animals are brilliantly gilt, the flames iron red and the clouds enameled in rich gosu and pale green. Outside the cartouches, the gosu blue ground is embellished by lacy scrollwork and iron red and gilt chrysanthemums. Elegant iron red and gilt rondels, front and back, contain the beloved Tokugawa mon.
Tanshu Ga iron- red signature is on the base.
This censer is in very good condition with minimal wear to the gilt and a slight, superficial half-inch hair line to the base.
