| This unusual ikebana flower basket, its strong bamboo worked with delicate, lacy weaving, is an extraordinary example of this artform. Created by a fourth generation of the great Shokosai family, it's bundled bamboo slats rise from its pedestal base woven to form an open-work, herring-bone plaiting. Two bands, center and shoulder, provide additional support and two, small handles shaped as bamboo rope, provide strong contrast to the overall delicacy of the piece. Done in the karamono style, this signed basket by "Hayakawa Shokosai IV" (1902-1975) exemplifies the family's preference for dying the material rather than treating the bamboo with lacquer. The result is a fine bamboo basket, with beautiful patination and an almost diaphanous appearance, defying the strength of the bamboo itself. This basket is in very good condition with no restoration or damage, The incised signature of Shokosai IV can be found on the base.
