| A remarkable tapered bamboo flower basket of trumpet form with square base and arched double handle. The handle's superb construction, with elaborate insect stitching, intricate knots and an unusual lacy design of concentric circles, provides both aesthetic surprise and additional support. In karamono-style, delicate strands of lacquered bamboo are divided by horizontal bands of twining and vertical bands of shrimp stitching. Its elegant body is woven with vertical insertions, crowned by a seven-jeweled rim with tortoise knots. This splendid basket is in excellent condition, the noted maker Shounsai's signature found on the base. Includes tomobako, dated 1932. Height: 16.5" Early Showa Period, Japan | |||||||||
