| Here is a large presentation-size iron tsuba inlaid with multi-metals. The legendary Kwanyu is portrayed stroking his long beard as he holds in his hand a message from T'sao T'sao-an episode in the celebrated stories of "The Wars of the Three Kingdoms." Garbed in Chinese-style robes patterned with auspicious dragons and wearing his characteristically elaborate head gear, Kwanyu is executed in copper, shakudo and gold nunome zogan, carved and chiseled details for the robe. On reverse, the etched signature,Senpo-sai, date, Kaei-Gannen (1849) and raised gold and copper signature cartouche can be found. This tsuba is in very good condition and includes it kiri-wood storage box with silk-padded interior. Late Edo, Japan | |||||||
