A globular and tripodic Satsuma incense burner designed in rich gosu blue, and iron red and green enamels with generous gilt detailing. Its collar, decorated with a leafy motif on an iron red ground, encircles the richly gilt body inter- sperced with an overall quatrefoil design in cobalt blue. The convex, lobed lid is fashioned from a single sheet of silver modeled with pawlonia leaves, flowers in relief and a central rondel of pierced Tokugawa mon. Four foliate cartouches on the stylized gosu and gilt ground, enclose scenes of ho-o birds in flight, their long feathered tails major design elements in this marvelous piece. This Satsuma incense burner is in excellent condition with no problems. Height: 5", diameter: 6" 19th Century, Japan
