A pair of bronze, copper-patinated hibachi (braziers) of modified globular form. With extensive incised detailing of stylized peony scroll work on the bodies, the pieces have dramatic handles formed as bats, their opened wings executed in shakudo. (Bats form part of the cultural and aesthetic repertoire of East Asia and are associated with good fortune and happiness.) These fine pieces are signed Issa saku on the bases and include individual tomobako. Very good condition with minimal wear. Height: 9.5", diameter: 12" Circa 1900, Japan
