Studio Porcelain Bowl With Sennin
This is a full-bodied studio porcelain bowl with wide rim and everted lip. On its slightly lobed body, eight cartouches depict Sennin in soft underglaze blue enamel surrounded by iron red and blue auspicious clouds. Each Sennin displays a specific attribute, such as the uchiwa, flower basket, double gourd and hand scroll. (Sennin were Chinese in origin, but their legend and iconography became revered in Japan.) The cartouches are separated by a mesh-like iron- red ground designed with a basket- weave pattern. This bowl is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restoration. Makuzu Kozan underglaze blue signature in a double-ring rondel can be seen on the base. Height: 6.5", diameter: 9.5" Meiji Period, Japan
