| An exquisite studio porcelain bowl with foliate rim and gently pleated body, its rare café-au-lait ground enameled with a creamy white slip. Lotus-like lappets rise from the base on the exterior and within, delicate white-enameled scrollwork frames a phoenix among vines in the bowl's central rondel. Demonstrating Makuzu Kozan's successful experimentation with ceramic glazing well before its time, this marvelous bowl is a subtle, but major example of his ingenuity. It is signed with Makuzu Kozan's seal mark on the base rendered in white slip and includes tomobako. Diameter: 7.75" late 19th Century, Japan | ||||||||
