An elegant gosu Satsuma vase with handles sculpted as wild demon heads,
their mouths open, teeth and tongue perfectly modeled. Glazed with gosu blue,
iron red, emerald green and iconic mohammedan blue, the distinctive collar
about the neck forms interlocking medallions with stylized kiku, aoi and pawlonia.
Stately peonies enameled in iron red and soft salmon rise from the foot.
The glorious rendering in low relief of the flower groups provides the focal point
of the vase, illustrating realistically its stems and leaves bent against the weight
of the flowers. This magnificent Satsuma vase is in excellent condition with no
problems and bears on its base the gosu Satsuma province mon and elaborate
gilt signature, reading I Jyu-in (high ranked) Satsuma yaki sei sei en Tanzen,
together with the artist's kao in gosu blue.
