A magnificent Imari porcelain censer, its tripodic form taken from Chinese vessels, with dramatic winged handles, roaring shishi finial and demon-shaped feet. Its pierced cover and globular body are worked in fine peony scrollwork in various shades of iron red and with gilt detailing. Four main cartouches of distinctive forms display ho-o mid pawlonia and a lush ikebana arrangement by a woven fence, a lovely maple tree visible in the background. This massive Imari censer shows minor signs of wear to the gilt, hardly discernable, but otherwise in excellent condition. Height: 17", width: 13" Meiji Period, Japan
