BELL'S POETS OF GREAT BRITAIN. ELIJAH FENTON. 1779.
THE POETICAL WORKS OF ELIJAH FENTON. With The Life Of The Author. Bell's Edition. The Poets Of Great Britain. Edinburg (sic): at the Apollo Press, By The Martins, 1779. 5" x 3". Bound in full leather with gilt ruled borders on both covers. The spine beautifully tooled with floral designs in compartments and with red and black onlays. Engraved pictorial title: "When Orpheus in the woods began to play". Marbled endpapers. Faded ink signature of previous owner at head of pictorial title and title pages otherwise a very good copy. This notable series was published from 1777 to 1783 and consisted of 109 volumes. John Bell (1745-1831) chose the best engravers and yet issued volumes costing only six shillings each. at a time when similar volumes were many times that. This volume is number 72.
