AN ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR SKETCH BY MANUEL E. KULUKUNDIS, (1898-1988). The painting depicts an 1880 Greek Barque and is painted in watercolors on the blank side of a PIERRE HOTEL post card. Manuel (or Manolis) Kulukundis was a Greek shipping magnate, a member of the 4th generation of the Kulukundis family active in shipping. He was instrumental in helping both Onassis and Niarchos during their early years. According to the Greek Shipping Hall of Fame, he had a photographic memory _ "this also enabled him to paint astonishingly detailed renderings of vessels seen many decades earlier. Rarely without his box of watercolors, he would paint almost anywhere, often in restaurants using the back of the establishment's menu. He continued painting well into his 70s and 80s and his affectionate portraits of vessels, apart from being prized collector's items, are a valuable record of a bygone age of Greek steamships". The watercolor offered here is painted on a Pierre Hotel post card and is signed lower right. Kukulundis spent his final years in residence at the Pierre Hotel, New York. The painting measures 3 1/4 inches by 5 1/8 inches.
