A beautiful Haviland & Cie. plate with handpainted decoration signed by A. A. Elliott. Limoges, circa 1888-1896. Marked in underglaze green (see enlargement 9). The plate has a lobed edge and pale lavender border featuring raised shell-form decoration in gilt. The center of the plate has been masterfully painted by A. A. Elliott and depicts a winged maiden gazing into a pool. I believe the maiden is meant to represent Psyche, the bride of Cupid, and who is always depicted with butterfly wings. She personifies the soul. This plate is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or hairlines. It measures 9 inches in diameter. An exquisite top quality cabinet plate.
