GREAT HOGGARTY DIAMOND.Thackeray.1902 BERKELEY COPY
$175.00

THE HISTORY OF SAMUEL TITMARSH AND THE GREAT HOGGARTY DIAMOND. By William Makepeace Thackeray. With Illustrations by Hugh Thomson. London: Wells Gardner, Darton & Co., 1902. 8vo. Blue cloth with pictorial design and title stamped in gilt. An all-over design on the front cover is stamped in grey....the back cover is stamped in blind. Top edge gilt. Black endpapers. Profuse black and white illustrations by Thomson. First edition, first issue. Spielmann & Jerrold 33. PROVENANCE: The COUNTESS OF BERKELEY'S copy with her bookplate laid-down on the front-free endpaper. Loosely laid-in is the Countess' original invoice for this copy dated July 18, 1935 and with her address of Berkeley Castle. Slight wear to the cover and a vertical crease to one blank leaf but over-all a very good copy. Notes: Berkeley Castle dates back to 1153 and the Berkeley family is one of only three families in England who can trace their ancestry back to Saxon times. King Edward II was imprisoned and murdered in the Castle in 1327. Of interest to Americans: William Berkeley became the first Governor of the state of Virginia in 1641; and, in the 18th century, both Yale University and the University of California (Berkeley) benefited from the legacy of Berkeley of Cloyne. Berkeley Square in London has been celebrated in song "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square".
