| ANTIQUE MOURNING JEWEL with PASTE, RUBIES, and DIAMONDS. A very fine 14K yellow gold (not marked but tested) and BE-JEWELED ENAMEL BOOK-SHAPED LOCKET. French, circa 1790-1810. The book-shaped locket is hinged and opens to reveal a fine PORTRAIT MINIATURE of a lady adorned with a pearl necklace and wearing a Catholic MOURNING BROOCH. The unsigned portrait is well-executed. It has been painted on ivory with silver leaf foil backing. The portrait fits loosely into one of the inner compartments of the locket (please see enlargements). Although it has no covering on the inside, it has benefited from this fact, by not being exposed to any light, dust or dirt. Also inside the locket, in the second compartment, is a MINIATURE BOOK BOUND IN RED MOROCCO LEATHER. Each cover of the book is tooled in gilt with a wavy line border and, in the center, there is a descending dove represented with an olive sprig which symbolizes the HOLY SPIRIT and HOPE and PROMISE. All edges gilt. The book contains manuscript pages which are in French and feature sentiments by the sitter's siblings written on fine laid paper. The 14K gold covers of the locket are decorated with borders of cobalt blue guilloche enameling (some chipping to the enamel on front and back). "Destin" is enamelled in a cobalt blue script on the back (some loss to enameling). The front of the locket has been mounted with an earlier 18th CENTURY HEART-SHAPED SAPPHIRE PASTE JEWEL mounted with a silver foliate design set with THREE GENUINE TABLET RUBIES AND TEN ROSE CUT AND TABLE CUT GENUINE DIAMONDS (please see enlargement 3 for details). The locket measures 2 inches in length by 1 5/8 inches in width by 5.50mm in depth. The portrait miniature measures 1 3/4 inches by 1 1/4 inches. The leather book measures 1 3/4 inches by 1 1/4 inches. This is an exceptional and lovely rare ANTIQUE MOURNING JEWEL, especially with the addition of the PORTRAIT MINIATURE and MANUSCRIPT MINIATURE BOOK.
