AN ORIGINAL CHILDREN'S BOOK COVER DESIGN BY PRIMROSE MCPHERSON PASCHAL FOR "A BIRTHDAY GARLAND" (not used). Circa 1949. SIGNED. Watercolor on paper featuring a delicate border design in pale green, rose and black with two vertical columns of pale pink roses. A double spread with a pencilled notation by the artist, lower right, "Cover Design". The left half has a mounted illustration of a head-and-shoulders watercolor on paper of a young girl in a fancy bonnet. SIGNED "P" lower right. This would have been the back cover illustration as well as being used inside the book. On the right half is a mounted watercolor on paper depicting four children - the tallest child carrying a birthday cake with five candles. SIGNED "P" lower right. This would have been the front cover illustration. The right hand mounted illustration has two small tears - one at the upper left (where taped), and one at the lower right (where taped). The image size is 6" x 11" in a mat measuring 11" x 16". The artist (as "Primrose") illustrated many books primarily for Thomas Y.Crowell & Co. and the Whitman Publishing Co.. I believe this was a preliminary sketch for Primrose's book "A BIRTHDAY GARLAND" published in 1949. The size and format is the same. Also, the statement on the flap of the book's dust jacket refers to lines from a Rachel Field poem - "Did you ever think how queer/ That every day all through the year,/ Someone has a frosted cake,/ And candles for a birthday's sake?" These same lines are repeated on the first page of the book and Primrose has featured an illustration of a birthday cake with five candles on the copyright page of the book. The book also has numerous illustrations of girls in fancy bonnets. Please see enlargements 9 & 10 for photos of "A Birthday Garland" showing the format of the book's dust jacket. Please see enlargements 11 & 12 - especially 12 - for an illustration of a girl in a fancy bonnet which was used in the book and is similar to the illustration on the left side of the drawing being offered here. Please check my listings for a first edition copy of the book "A Birthday Garland".
