| AN ORIGINAL PEN AND INK ILLUSTRATION BY REGINALD BATHURST BIRCH (1856-1943) FOR "STORY OF ROBIN HOOD". Published in ST. NICHOLAS MAGAZINE. Vol. 10, No. 7, page 658. 1883. With pencilled notations: : "Robin Hood marks the spot for his grave" and, "Story of Robin Hood" and "St Nicholas". There is a notation on the back of the illustration "The Last Shaft". The illustration is executed in pen and ink on artist's Bristol board measuring 13' x 15" which is further laid down on a larger piece of cardboard. SIGNED in ink: "BIRCH" lower right. The illustration depicts a dying Robin Hood about to send forth his last arrow to mark the spot for his grave. There is one small area where a minor small tear has been repaired (see enlargement 4). Reginald Birch, a British-born American artist and illustrator, contributed many fine drawings for the St. Nicholas Magazine but is best known for his book illustrations - especially those for Frances Hodgson Burnett's famous book "LITTLE LORD FAUNTLEROY" (1886) which brought him lasting fame. | |||||||||||
