| AN ORIGINAL PRELIMINARY DRAWING FOR KATE GREENAWAY'S BIRTHDAY BOOK PUBLISHED IN 1880. This original drawing by Kate Greenaway (1846-1901) is a preliminary sketch for her illustration of "HODGE" which is pictured on page 107 of the book (please see enlargement 4 for the final printed version of the drawing in the book - and enlargement 5 which shows the cover of the book). The drawing depicts the seated figure of a small boy (Hodge) who sits holding a bowl and spoon in his lap. The drawing is on paper with image size measuring 3 3/16" by 2 9/16". Mounted in a gilt trimmed French mat of acid-free museum quality and measuring 6 7/8" by 7 1/8". Unsigned but guaranteed Greenaway original. Provenance: Greenaway, Dadd, Goddard.
