BOOKPLATE OF LEWIS CARROLL'S GRANDFATHER C. LUTWIDGE
RARE EX LIBRIS BOOKPLATE OF CHARLES LUTWIDGE OF HOLMROOK HALL, CUMBRIA. An engraved bookplate on fine laid paper measuring approximately 3 3/4" x 2 1/2". A spade armorial bookplate - motto: DEO PATRIAE AMICIS (To God, my country and friends). Engraved, in script, Charles Lutwidge, HolmRook. CHARLES LUTWIDGE (b. 15 June 1768-d.7 September 1848) was LEWIS CARROLL'S maternal GRANDFATHER. CHARLES LUTWIDGE DODGSON (CARROLL) recorded, in his diaries, visits to his grandfather's home HOLMROOK HALL. The bookplate is in excellent condition with portions of the plate mark visible.
