THE ROBIN'S CHRISTMAS EVE. By C.E. Bowen. Illustrated By Winnifred M. Warne. London & New York: Frederick Warne & Co. Ltd., (no copyright and no date). 8vo. Green boards stamped on the front cover with black lettering and holly design and with an oval pictorial color illustration. Illustrated endpapers. Title page vignette and FOURTEEN COLOR PLATES BY WINNIFRED M. WARNE. Winnifred Mary Langrish Warne was the daughter of Beatrix Potter's publisher FRUING WARNE and was her fiance NORMAN WARNE'S favorite niece. Beatrix Potter dedicated her book "The Tale of Two Bad Mice" to Winnifred: "To W.M.L.W. The little girl with the dolls house". The charming illustrations by Winnifred for this book have obviously been strongly influenced by Beatrix Potter and are quite competent. A very scarce book. This copy has been re-backed (or possibly re-inforced - it's difficult to tell for sure) with brown paper. Ink inscription on front free endpaper and recto frontispiece. The contents are complete however one illustration is detached and is loosely inserted. There is a statement from the publishers on what would normally be the copyright page: "The constant demand for a re-issue of this famous poem for children has induced the publishers to offer this newly illustrated edition." FIRST EDITION THUS. An interesting and rare little volume.
