| AN ORIGINAL PENCIL SKETCH FOR A "STATUETTE" BY "PHIZ" - HABLOT KNIGHT BROWNE (1815-1882). The sketch is identified in the artist's hand as "Model/statuette on...." followed by three more words that are illegible (please see enlargements 5 & 6). The sketch (obverse) depicts a young lad dressed in tartan Scottish "trews" and tam-o-shanter. He holds a large hoop and a lively dog is by his side looking up at him. The sketch (reverse) is pencilled in the artist's hand "statuette" and "Over" and has an almost identical version of the same sketch but with less detail. The drawing is executed on paper (removed from a sketch pad and marked p.24) measuring 7" x 4 1/2" which is in a larger mat measuring 11 1/2" x 10 1/2". Hablot Knight Browne is famous as "PHIZ" the illustrator of CHARLES DICKENS' best-known books. This sketch indicates he also was commissioned for artistic objects. See also my listing for a Stafforshire DINNER PLATE which he designed for William Brownfield in 1862. This sketch is identified as by Hablot Knight Browne by an unknown person. Unsigned by Browne himself but with the artist's pencilled notes in his own hand. Circa 1860? | ||||||||||
