| AN AUTOGRAPHED LETTER BY PHIL MAY TO LUTHER MUNDAY. No date, circa 1890s. On Phil May's personal stationery measuring 6" x 4" (1/2 of what was originally a double-fold notelet) and headed: "ROWSLEY,/HOLLAND PARK ROAD,/KENSINGTON,W.". The letter is written to "My Dear Luther Munday". 14 lines apologizing for being unable to perform at one of Munday's "entertainments" but stating he "will look in and give you a few minutes in the black board. Some day when I am a little less busy". Philip William May (1864-1903) was a famous British caricaturist and artist who often perfomed what he called "lightning sketches" for his artist friends at his club "in the small hours". Obviously, Luther Munday (1857-1923), in his capacity as Secretary and Musician Manager of the NEW LYRIC CLUB, had inquired of May whether he would perform at one of his own Lyric Club functions. Munday was also a British author and associate of Oscar Wilde. The letter is in excellent condition and bears a fine bold signature by PHIL MAY. | |||||
