The sitting Monju Bosatsu (Manjushri) has five hair knots associated with the five kinds of wisdom of Shingon Buddhism. The detailed and fine figure of Manju is sitting on a lotus throne carried by six shishi lions. Height 13.5 cm. Diameter of the (closed) bottom 7.2 cm. In excellent condition. Japan, 19th. century.

The Japanese monk Kukai (Konghai in Chinese)studied Buddhism in China from 804-806 (during the Tang dynasty) and returned to Japan with important texts and works of art. He introduced esoteric Buddhism and Buddhist art in Japan. The statue is in very good condition. The bronze is of good, heavy quality. Height 13 cm.

Impressive and beautiful statue of Nikko Bosatsu, the bodhisattva of solar radiance (Suryaprabha). Joint wood block construction (yozegi zukuri)with gold leaf and lacquer. The mandorla inscription says: Bunsei period (Edo), 9th. year, february 9, 1826.

Japanese statue of Daiitoku Myo (Yamantaka) sitting on a cow. He is the guardian deity (wrathful emanation) of Amida Nyorai (Amitabha). Bronze. In very good condition. Height 32cm; 21cm. wide. The cow is 23 cm. Weight 4 kg.
