Impressive mandala Gohonzon (ink on paper)with the mantra Nam Myoho Renge Kyo (Nichiren Buddhism). This form of calligraphy was already practiced by Nichiren himself. This one is made by the Nichiren monk Nikko in the 9th. year of the Bunsei period (1826).

This Japanese scroll represents Nichiren (1222 - 1282, the founder of the Nichiren school in Buddhism. Size of the scroll: 112 / 34 cm. Size of the painting 59 / 24 cm. Early Meiji.

This Japanese Buddhist temple drum is made of keyaki wood with black and gilt characters and metal buttons and handles. The drum comes with a stick. Diameter 51 cm.

A beautiful pair of shell containers (Kaibitsu)with messing fittings, used for the Kaiawase game. The matching of painted shells symbolizes faithfulness in marriage. A shell game set belonged often to the trousseau of a bride. The hampers are in excellent condition and they come with the original wooden boxes. Japan, Edo period. The height of the shell boxes is 43 cm. The diameter is 38,5 cm.

The upper part of the bell and the upper part of the scepter consists of a vajra (five prongs) arising from a lotus flower. Metal and wood. In good condition. Height: scepter 36 cm., bell 34 cm. Japan, 19th. century.

The sitting Monju Bosatsu (Manjushri) has five hair knots associated with the five kinds of wisdom of Shingon Buddhism. The detailed and fine figure of Manju is sitting on a lotus throne carried by six shishi lions. Height 13.5 cm. Diameter of the (closed) bottom 7.2 cm. In excellent condition. Japan, 19th. century.

The Japanese monk Kukai (Konghai in Chinese)studied Buddhism in China from 804-806 (during the Tang dynasty) and returned to Japan with important texts and works of art. He introduced esoteric Buddhism and Buddhist art in Japan. The statue is in very good condition. The bronze is of good, heavy quality. Height 13 cm.

Impressive and beautiful statue of Nikko Bosatsu, the bodhisattva of solar radiance (Suryaprabha). Joint wood block construction (yozegi zukuri)with gold leaf and lacquer. The mandorla inscription says: Bunsei period (Edo), 9th. year, february 9, 1826. The bodhisattvas Nikko and Gekko are the attendants of Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha of healing.
