Rare contemporary document with 12 woodblock printed illustrations produced 1877 during the North China famine by Chinese philanthropists in imperial China, to draw attention to the enormous disaster. In 1878 this booklet was translated by the great Sinologist J. Legge and published in London under the title "The Famine in China". Two export porcelain dishes beautifully decorated in underglaze blue, dating to the Yongzheng period. The central design depicting two elegant ladies in a garden setting, in the foreground two boys at play. The scene is surrounded by a diaper border with figural panels.
