Persian Qalamkar Tray Cover with Arabic Inscriptions.
A rectangular cover made of glazed cotton lavishly block-printed and dyed, produced in Isfahan in the 19th century. Centrally a medallion with cypresses surrounded by meandering flowers, and a row with cartouches containing Arabic inscriptions. Qalamkar textiles were especially popular in Persia, often imported from India (here called Kalamkari). From a Swiss gentleman's study collection, mainly comprising Persian textiles. For similar tray covers please look at the V&A publication by Jennifer Wearden and Patricia L. Baker: "Iranian Textiles": nos. 88 and 89. Condition: fine, few traces of usage. Dimension: 106 cm x 112 cm.
