ANCIENT APULIAN GNATHIAN-WARE BOTTLE

ATTRIBUTED TO THE ROSE PAINTER

CIRCA 340-320 B.C.

Beautiful bottle from Gnathia attributed to the Rose Painter. Done in the classic Gnathia style with large bands of ivy garlands, dotted ovolo, filled dots and rays. Painted in red,white and yellow highlights.

The central figure shows imagery of a swan, an iconographic identifier of Aphrodite. Measures 6 1/4 inches in height.

Here you find a lovely ancient ceramic lekythos from Greece. It has a tall slender body sitting on a pedestal foot, with sharp angled shoulder with painted ray pattern on a thin neck. The rim is flared with a small handle but all intact. The red-figure painted scene is of an athlete holding a strigil for cleaning and in front the athlete is a bench with two aryballi (oil containing vessel). A lovely ancient Greek globular pyxis with dark bands surrounding the body and lid. A dot motif, in which could possibly represent a floral decoration surrounds the body. Misfiring has caused a portion of the vase to turn reddish orange. Intact with good mineral deposits and root markings inside. Circa 550-525 B.C. Measures 3.5 inches high.

A very elegant ancient kantharos of Boeotian origin which dates to circa 450 BC. This clay Greek kantharos sits on low ring foot, its underside reserved. This pottery has a steep wall construction, offset to the foot. Both handles drawn up above the rim and stretch wide. Measures 6.5 inches in diameter, has a nice matt black glaze finish however, one side slightly worn (as seen in photo) otherwise, in excellent condition.

Here you find a lovely ancient Attic red-figure pottery askos of the Kerch group of vases. Dates to approx 340-330 BC. Has a swan on one side of the body and a griffin on the other, both of which are symbolic in Greek mythology. High arching handles with a wide spout. Some surface rubbing on glaze and hairline underneath and on the bridge of the handle. Measures 12.3 cm in length.

Lovely ancient impasto ware Etruscan Kantharoid vase with twin handles and fluted body. Three clustered bronze appliqués are impressed on both sides of the body just above the protruding rotellae. Bronze appliqués are also present on top of the knobbed portion of the handles. A roulette meander surrounds the vessel with incised detailed. Dates to circa the 7th century BC and measures 5.25 inches in width. Vessel has some eroded areas as seen in photo, however very stable.

Daunian bi-chrome pottery kantharos with twin handles and geometric stripes and wavy lines around body with footed base. Delicate form and dates to 4th century BC; Southern Italy. Measures 4-1/8” in height, minor rim chip, as shown.

This collection of over 200 artifacts was uncovered by Captain Farwell near the end of WWII. Several of the pieces were displayed in museums in Italy, as well as Detroit and most have been published in a book written by Captain Farwell.

Here you find a lovely Greek South Italic Olpe which dates to circa the 5th - 4th century BC. Item was excavated from a necropolis near Ordona, Italy by Byron Farwell in 1944-1945. Great example of an intact ancient cup; terracotta vessel painted with orange-red banding at center and around inner and outer rim. Dimensions 4-1/2"H x 3 1/2"W, intact save for a few minor surface scuffs and paint loss, as shown.
